Underrepresentation of Māori and Pasifika in professional and highly technical jobs and industries is a systemic and historical problem that employers can nonetheless help fix. This will involve deep engagement at an individual and industry-wide level with the education system, Māori and Pasifika-led training providers, and social service providers to rebuild the workforce development pipeline. This could include:

  • Training partnerships and direct hiring collaborations with training providers, universities, and schools, especially supporting STEM pathways.

  • Thinking differently about attraction to an industry for people who have no experience or social capital within the industry.

  • Sector-wide coordination over workforce development planning. Download Employer Landscape Report.

  • Non-traditional pathways into an industry that allow for in-work training e.g. professional apprenticeships.
